Revision 4.24.0
EXPLANATION of MESSAGES
***********************
1. "Code corrupted (CRC error) ─ Execution cancelled"
--------------------------------------------------
A failure of 32-bit cyclical redundancy check was encountered when VIz was
executed.
2. "Requires 286 or higher CPU ─ Execution cancelled"
--------------------------------------------------
286+ versions of VIz cannot be executed in 8088, 8086, or (some) 80186 CPU
machines.
3. "Requires 386 or higher CPU ─ Execution cancelled"
--------------------------------------------------
386+ versions of VIz cannot be executed in 8088, 8086, 80186, or 80286 CPU
machines.
4. "Requires DOS 2.0 or higher ─ Execution cancelled"
--------------------------------------------------
The program requires an MS-DOS compatible version equal to or greater than
2.10 for proper execution.
5. "Unknown video card or incompatible CRT controller"
---------------------------------------------------
VIz was unable to determine the active video adapter and, thus, is unable
to mediate video acceleration services. Execution is cancelled.
6. "Installed - Enter 'VIz ?' for Help"
------------------------------------
VIz was successfully executed and the resident(s) installed.
7. "ANSI.SYS or similar utility is already installed"
"Loading of the resident ANSI filter is cancelled"
--------------------------------------------------
During installation with switch /A selected, interrupt 29h was found to be
pointing to a device (or a resident mimicking a device) with the name CON.
Since such a device is likely to be ANSI.SYS (or an ANSI-like utility) the
resident ANSI filter of VIz is not installed; to force installation of the
ANSI filter, uninstall VIz and reinstall with switch /A+.
8. "Updated - Enter 'VIz ?' for Status"
------------------------------------
The relevant resident parameters of VIz were successfuly updated.
9. "Not enough memory to restore video contents"
"Continue? [Yn] "
---------------------------------------------
When switch /C?, /?H, or /? is selected, VIz attempts to allocate via DOS
an additional 4500 bytes for video processing. This message is displayed
if enough memory is not available (other functions can still be executed).
Press <Enter> or <Y> to proceed with display, or <Esc> or <N> to abort.
10. "Invalid switch /Xx - Request disregarded"
------------------------------------------
An invalid switch designator (X) or parameter (x) was passed to VIz.
11. "Cannot add resident modules after installation"
"Uninstall and then reinstall with switch '/A+'"
------------------------------------------------
Switch /A+ was requested after VIz was installed without the resident ANSI
filter. Viz needs to be uninstalled and then reinstalled with the switch.
12. "Cannot add resident modules after installation"
"Uninstall and then reinstall with switch '/Vn'"
------------------------------------------------
Switch /Vn was requested after VIz was installed without the cursor module
being resident. Viz needs to be uninstalled and then reinstalled with the
switch.
13. "Invalid page request"
----------------------
A page greater than the maximum page allowed by the video adapter and the
current video font was requested. The CGA supports four 80x25 text pages
(0-3). The EGA, MCGA, and VGA support eight 80x25 pages (0-7), or 4 pages
when 80x43 (EGA), 80x40 (MCGA), or 80x50 (VGA) font displays are used.
14. "Only pages 0-3 can be used with 43/50-row fonts"
-------------------------------------------------
A video page (4 through 7) incompatible with the video font was requested
(see above).
15. "Not enough memory to load 12-row or 35-row font"
"Continue? [Yn] "
-------------------------------------------------
When switch /F12 or /F35 is selected, VIz attempts to allocate via DOS an
additional 7040 or 11648 bytes for video font processing. This message is
displayed if enough memory is not available (other functions can still be
executed). Press <Enter> or <Y> to proceed with font, or <Esc> or <N> to
abort.
16. "Invalid mode request"
----------------------
A video mode incompatible with the (active) video adapter was requested.
17. "Invalid adapter request"
-------------------------
An operation or service incompatible with the (active) video adapter was
requested.
18. "Incomplete RGB data - Partial palette update"
----------------------------------------------
An incomplete list of EGA/VGA palette RGB mixtures was provided. Only the
data provided were updated.
19. "Invalid RGB datum - Palette unchanged"
---------------------------------------
An invalid RGB mixture datum was provided in an EGA/VGA palette list. The
data of the palette were not changed.
20. "Invalid bell frequency"
------------------------
A bell tone frequency less than 25 Hz or more than 5000 Hz was requested.
21. "ANSI driver not yet installed"
-------------------------------
Switch /A- was requested when the ANSI filter had not been installed.
22. "Uninstalled"
-------------
The program resident was successfuly deallocated from memory.
23. "Not yet installed"
-------------------
Uninstalling was requested when the program was not yet installed.
24. "Interrupt XXh has been revectored - Cannot uninstall"
"Remove revectoring or inactivate with switches /Q/A-"
------------------------------------------------------
The address (segment:offset) of the specified interrupt has been changed
since its interception during the program installation; if more than one
interrupt was revectored, only the first one is displayed.
25. "Failed to release resident block [DOS error ??h]"
--------------------------------------------------
DOS did not deallocate the lower-memory block allocated to the resident
at the time of installation. One of two error codes may be expected:
7 - Memory blocks above the DOS area trashed.
9 - Invalid block request.
These errors indicate a corruption of the memory control chain of the
operating system. Reboot machine as soon as possible.
26. "Failed to detect presence of an XMS manager (XMM)"
---------------------------------------------------
The program failed to determine presence of a driver compatible with the
Extended Memory Specification (XMS) version 2+, and the requested upper-
memory load (/H) defaulted to a normal, lower-memory installation.
27. "Failed to allocate upper-memory block [XMS error ??h]"
-------------------------------------------------------
The XMS manager did not allocate the requested UMB; one of the following
XMS error codes may be expected:
80h - Function is not implemented.
8Eh - General driver error occurred.
8Fh - Unrecoverable driver error occurred.
B0h - Smaller UMB is available.
B1h - No UMBs are available.
B2h - UMB segment number is invalid.
28. "Failed to allocate upper-memory block [DOS error ??h]"
-------------------------------------------------------
DOS 5.0 did not allocate the requested UMB; one of the following error
codes may be expected:
7 - Memory blocks above the DOS area trashed.
8 - Not enough memory.
Error 7 indicates corruption of the memory control chain of DOS; reboot
immediately. Error 8 indicates that UMBs are not available; install the
program in low memory.
29. "Memory allocation mode not restored [DOS error ??h]"
-----------------------------------------------------
Failed to restore the default DOS memory allocation strategy after the
program changed it for UMB allocation. Reboot immediately.
30. "Failed to release upper-memory block [XMS error ??h]"
------------------------------------------------------
The XMM did not free the allocated UMB. (See above for XMS error codes
8Eh, 8Fh, and B2h.)
31. "Failed to release upper-memory block [DOS error ??h]"
------------------------------------------------------
DOS 5.0 did not free the allocated UMB. (See above for DOS error codes
07h and 09h.)
32. "UMB not available above requested minimum"
-------------------------------------------
A free upper-memory block was not available above the lower high-memory
address specified by switch /Hn. Resident was installed at a lower UMB
whose value is displayed in the installation message.
33. "Unable to change DOS environment [Error ?]"
--------------------------------------------
Failed to create/update the requested environment variable. Three error
codes are possible:
1: Not enough room in the global environment block.
2: Null terminator for environment block not found.
3: Null size environment block.
Error 1 may be due to a small DOS environment block, while errors 2 and
3 indicate corruption of this block.
34. "DOS loaded high (HMA) - Switch /E ignored"
-------------------------------------------
Failed to create/update the requested environment variable when DOS 5.0
was installed in the High Memory Area. The error may be due to a small
DOS environment block, or an undocumented DOS change. If an increase of
the environment size does not help, please contact the program vendor.
